Accounting I Syllabus
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course teaches the most basic concepts used in the field of accounting, which will be useful for anyone going into the world of business, or considering running a business of their own. It covers the accounting cycle twice, using different forms of businesses. In addition to covering the accounting cycle, such special areas as sales tax and preparing a payroll are covered. For the non-career students, such areas as writing checks, reconciling bank statements, and other pertinent economic ideas are covered. Simulation packets will be used to give a general sense of working through the entire accounting cycle for a hypothetical business.

ASSESMENT
Your grades will be figured with a weighted grading system. Your average score of each section (assignments, tests, etc.) will be multiplied by the following percentages, and added together:
Tests/Quizzes: 50%
Assignments: 20%
Packets: 20%
Participation: 10%
Tests/Quizzes: After each chapter, a test will be given to evaluate your progress on the materials covered. Quizzes will be given at random when needed. Semester and final exams will also be given.
Assignments: You will have a weekly list of assignments and due dates available to you on aplia. Late assignments will not be accepted by aplia. If the deadline passes before an assignment is submitted, it will only be worth whatever portion is completed. Other assignments (not on aplia) may be given periodically.
Packets: Two simulation packets will be assigned during the course of the year. These packets will teach the student how accounting is used in real life situations. They will not be completed through aplia, rather through online software called Automated Accounting.
Participation: Each week students are able to earn 25 points that will be credited towards their participation grade. These points can be deducted for lack of preparation, lack of class materials, lack of participation in class, poor behavior or other reasons deemed by the teacher. Tardies and absences also lower your participation grade.
