Computer Concepts Syllabus
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is actually two semester-long courses designed to develop awareness and understanding of basic computer skills and understanding of the Internet to promote success in school, work, and life. The first semester should get students well acquainted with using the core Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel). The second semester will include computing fundamentals, such as recognizing computers and using Microsoft Windows, as well as how to use our current online living environment more to its potential. The ultimate goal of this course is for each student to become certified using the globally recognized Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3) tests.

Assignments
You will receive time to work on assignments in class, but if you fall behind you will need to make up the work outside of class time.
Tests
At the end of each unit, students will be tested on their understanding of the subject matter in a written and in a hands-on exam.
Participation
Each week students are able to earn 25 points that will be credited towards their participation grade. These points can be earned by being prepared every day with the proper class materials, by participating in class discussions and answering questions when called upon, and by being generally well behaved. Tardies and absences will lower your participation grade.
GRADING SCALE
98-100 = A+ 78-79 = C+ below 60 = F
93-97 = A 73-77 = C
90-92 = A- 70-72 = C-
88-89 = B+ 68-69 = D+
83-87 = B 63-67 = D
80-82 = B- 60-62 = D-

OVERVIEW OF CONTENT
First Quarter
- Windows Explorer: This unit will introduce students to the Windows operating system, Internet Explorer, and the basics of using email.
- Word: Microsoft Word is one of the most widely used software programs in today’s society as it serves as the foundation for completing most communication documents. With this word processing software, you will learn important skills such as formatting text, using various tools such as AutoCorrect and spell check, setting margins and tabs, moving and copying text, and printing business documents including letters, envelopes, and labels.
Second Quarter
- PowerPoint: From the classroom to a business, the ability to successfully present information to others is an invaluable skill. This unit gives students the skills needed to create an effective presentation which will connect with their audience. Students will learn about important features, from keying text in a slideshow to running one, and working with shapes and colors to using templates and clip art.
- Excel: Today, spreadsheets are used in nearly every organization in the world, regardless of size. Spreadsheets provide a company with a way to analyze data and make predictions based on their conclusions. This unit supplies students with the knowledge needed to complete a spreadsheet application. Additionally, by using real world scenarios, students will gain not only an understanding of the Microsoft Excel program, but the use of this program in a business setting. The second semester will use the more traditional textbook method of instruction, but the material covered is information that most adults find themselves wishing they knew to be more effective and knowledgeable users of computers. Students are likely to find the material in these units to be very useful, practical, and at times exciting.
Third Quarter
- Computing Fundamentals
- Recognizing Computers: This unit introduces you to different types of computers, the basic parts of a computer, basic troubleshooting techniques, what to look for when buying a computer, and how software works.
- Using Microsoft Windows: This unit introduces the Windows operating system including the Desktop, installing and running applications, managing files and folders, and customizing settings.
- Living Online
- Getting Connected: This unit sets out the background to the Internet, introduces the basics of networks, and provides an understanding of the fundamentals of e-mail.
- Using the Internet: This unit explains Internet usage and includes common terminology, finding information using web browsers and search engines, minimizing the risk of viruses and using the Internet responsibly.
